QuarkXPress 8.1 released.

Posted: Aug 8 2009

Quark has released an extremely important update to QuarkXPress 8, bringing the version to 8.1 for both Mac and Windows platforms. This update is critical for using FormsX 8 as it incorporates several important fixes, including:

* Checkborder fonts will now correctly download with the print job
* FormsX objects uniquely colored with a spot color will now appear correctly in output
* NumbersX 8 compatibility

Discussion

In 8.0X builds of QuarkXPress, the QXP application failed to download FormsX checkborder fonts as it should. The 8.1 update corrects this behavior.

In QXP 8.0, if you have a FormsX object like a pantograph colored with a spot color, and no other object on the page uses that same spot color, the spot color would not get imaged in the PostScript or PDF output. This was due to a bug in QXP 8.0 and has been corrected in 8.1.

NumbersX, our sequential numbering product, now works correctly in 8.1. Under 8.0 the application crashed upon a production run.

We urge all QuarkXPress 8 users to install this update asap. We will shortly release a FormsX 8 update that will require using 8.1 because of the necessary fixes.

This is Quark's description of the 8.1 update:

This update improves PDF output capabilities and introduces features that make the page-layout process even more intuitive and productive. QuarkXPress 8.1 introduces a ‘Native Transparency’ mode for creating PDFs which can offer designers faster and more flexible PDF output support and provide greater control over their PDF workflow process. This release also renovates spell checking, adds the ability to paste text without formatting, and improves productivity with Scale functionality. QuarkXPress 8.1 also fine tunes Usability and Item Styles. In addition, it can help prevent errors by reporting faux font styles such as bold or italic. This version readies QuarkXPress for Snow Leopard and Windows 7 compatibility, and the Windows version of this release adds a Welcome Screen.
